About Us

The G20media.org web portal was created to serve as a comprehensive information clearinghouse for members of the media and as a centralized hub for organizers and others interested in dissent around the G-Summit in Pittsburgh.

The mobilization may be over, but the quest for justice and accountability in the aftermath of the massive paramilitary suppression of public dissent is just beginning. G20media.org will continue to serve as an information clearinghouse during the accountability phase.

Information on this website includes:

  • An archive of events, press releases, press clippings, action alerts, etc. of the voices of dissent around the G-20 Summit
  • New action alerts, press releases, etc. from organizations who seek justice and accountability
  • Contact information for the organizers or spokespeople for each of these activities

G20media.org will continue to track reportage in order to hold media personnel and their outlets to a reasonable standard of fairness and accuracy. If necessary, the team will work to correct misconceptions and argue for response time or balance or both. In worst-case scenarios, the team will profile hostile or unprofessional reporters, editors, producers and media outlets on this site.

This media watch and action is an essential part of the G20 dissent organizing effort. That's because over the past ten years, the mainstream media has repeatedly engaged in practices that undermine protesters first amendment rights:

  • demonized protesters who challenge summits, meeings or conventions involving the G8, the G20, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Free Trade Area of the Americas, the World Trade Organization, the DNC, RNC, among others.
  • either directly or indirectly supported the militarization of police - and outright police violce - that quashes and criminalizes First Amendment activities
  • marginalized the voices of those most effected by the policy decisions made by world leaders (who tend to meet in secrecy, and usually in inacessible regions).

G20media.org was originally maintained by the G20 Media Support Team, a collective effort that grew out of the Thomas Merton Center's ongoing "umbrella" meetings for organizers.

Now the site is maintained by Save Our Civil Liberties, a project of the Thomas Merton Center that formed in the aftermath of the brutal paramilitary of free speech at the 2003 Miami FTAA Ministerial.
